The official CrystalDiskInfo installer now includes optional advertising, which made me uncomfortable enough to avoid downloading it and reinstall Windows after encountering it. I know the portable ZIP version is generally considered cleaner, but I'm wondering whether the Microsoft Store release is also safe and trustworthy. Are there any differences or risks I should know about?

Reinstalling Windows isn’t normally necessary just because an installer offers optional advertising. You can cancel the setup, uninstall the program, or use the portable version instead. Being cautious is fine, but make sure the download source and file signature or checksum are genuine before running anything.
If you want to avoid the ad-supported installer, use the portable ZIP release from the official CrystalMark download page. It doesn’t require installation and is the usual alternative. A reputable mirror such as SourceForge may also host the project files, but verify that you’re downloading the correct project and version.
The Microsoft Store version is a reasonable option because Store apps are distributed through Microsoft’s package and signing system. Still, check that the publisher is the legitimate CrystalMark developer and that the app name and version match the official project. If you’re already comfortable with the portable ZIP, that avoids the installer entirely.

I realize that was an extreme reaction, but the bundled advertising made me lose confidence in the installer. I’ll stick with the portable release or carefully verify the Store publisher.
