I'm planning a gaming-focused PC with a total budget of up to $4,000. The build will use a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO, 32GB of DDR5 memory, a 2TB Acer Predator GM7 SSD, an MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk MAX WIFI motherboard, a 1000W Gold power supply, and a Lian Li V100 ATX case. I'm also planning to buy an ASUS TUF VG27AQ3A 27-inch 1440p 180Hz monitor, while I already have the other peripherals.
I can save roughly $300–$400 per week, so buying the RTX 5080 would take about two or three extra weeks compared with buying the RX 9070 XT. The price difference is currently around $800. My main uses will be gaming, possibly streaming, game development, digital art, and music composition. Is the 5080 worth waiting and paying substantially more for, or would the 9070 XT make more sense for this build?

Since prices for graphics cards, memory, and storage can change significantly over the next couple of months, I wouldn’t lock in the decision too early. Recheck the prices when you’re ready to buy. If the gap is still around $800, choose the 9070 XT; if the difference shrinks dramatically, then the 5080 could become more appealing.
For 1440p gaming, the RX 9070 XT is the much better value. The RTX 5080 is faster and has a major advantage in ray tracing and features such as DLSS, but its typical performance increase doesn’t justify an extra $800 for this use case. Unless you specifically need CUDA for work, AI, or a software workflow that benefits from NVIDIA, I’d put the money toward the 9070 XT or a better monitor.
I’d consider spending some of the savings on the display instead. Your planned 1440p monitor is decent, but a higher-end OLED model with a 240Hz or higher refresh rate would make a more noticeable difference to the viewing experience than moving from a 9070 XT to a 5080. The 9070 XT should already pair very well with a 1440p high-refresh monitor.
The 5080 makes more sense if you’re targeting 4K, heavily using path tracing, or really want NVIDIA’s feature set. Path tracing is an especially demanding form of ray tracing, so the 5080 handles those games better. At 1440p, though, the 9070 XT should be plenty for high-refresh gaming, and the 5080 is closer to overkill than a necessary upgrade.
The 5080 is roughly 15–25% faster in ordinary gaming depending on the title, so the improvement may be noticeable but it isn’t remotely proportional to an $800 premium. At 60 FPS, that kind of upgrade might mean roughly 9–15 additional frames. If you want the best value, get the 9070 XT; choose the 5080 only if you value NVIDIA’s features, ray tracing performance, or CUDA enough to pay for them.

That makes sense. I’ll mainly be gaming and doing creative work, not CUDA or AI work, so the extra cost probably isn’t worthwhile for me.
