I'm building a gaming PC on a tight budget and am considering the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X. Would either processor be enough for light to medium gaming, including games like Half-Life 2, Red Dead Redemption, GTA V, and Elden Ring? Is the 5600 still a good buy compared with newer or used options?

The 5600 is generally the better choice than the 5600X. Their gaming performance is only a few percent apart, so the X model is worth considering only when it costs about the same. As a rough guideline, try to stay around $100 or less for a 5600, depending on your local prices.
For an extremely tight budget, the Ryzen 5 5500 can also work and is often cheaper, but the 5600 is roughly 15% faster and has more cache. If the price difference is manageable, I would choose the 5600 for better performance and longevity.
Yes—the Ryzen 5 5600 is still an excellent budget CPU, especially if you already have an AM4 motherboard and DDR4 memory. It can handle modern games comfortably, and the graphics card will usually be the limiting factor at 1080p or 1440p.
It also pairs well with cards such as an RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 5060, or a comparable Radeon card. At 1440p, 60 FPS gaming is very realistic in many titles.
The 5600 is more than enough for the games you listed. It will run modern releases well, although very high frame rates at 1080p can expose its limits sooner than gaming at 1440p. Make sure you have adequate cooling and pair it with a suitably balanced graphics card.

If you find a 5600X3D near $175, that can be a stronger gaming option, but it is only worthwhile if the price and availability are good. Otherwise, the regular 5600 offers much better value.
