I'm planning a CPU upgrade and am choosing between the Ryzen 7 5800X3D at about $386 and the Ryzen 5 5500X3D at around $235. I game at 1440p while usually running Discord, Chrome with several tabs, and similar background apps. My system has 32GB of RAM and an RTX 5070. Is the extra cost worthwhile for two additional cores and higher clock speeds, or would the 5500X3D be enough for this setup?

I would wait for a better deal if possible. The 5500X3D becomes much more attractive around the $150–$200 range, while paying over $300 for the 5800X3D is difficult to recommend on an older platform unless you specifically need its extra multicore performance.
At 1440p with an RTX 5070, the 5500X3D should already provide a strong gaming experience, especially because the 3D V-Cache helps in CPU-heavy games. The 5800X3D is faster and its two extra cores are useful for heavier multitasking and better long-term headroom, but the performance increase probably does not justify an extra $150 unless you play especially CPU-limited games or want to keep the platform for several more years.
If you already have a 5600X, there is no need to rush into either upgrade at those prices. Keep using it until prices drop, then consider whichever X3D model offers the best deal. Discord and a few browser tabs alone do not require the 5800X3D.
I’d compare actual prices before buying. The 5800X3D can be the better choice if you find a sale, but at full price the cheaper chip is likely the better value.
