I'm planning a CPU upgrade for QHD gaming while running Discord, Chrome with several tabs, and other background apps. My system has 32GB of RAM and an RTX 5070. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D costs about $386, while the Ryzen 5 5500X3D is around $235. Is the extra money worth it for two additional cores and roughly 500 MHz higher clock speeds, or would the 5500X3D be enough for this setup?

At those prices, the 5500X3D is probably the better value. For QHD gaming, the GPU usually matters more, and its 3D V-Cache should still provide strong performance. The 5800X3D makes more sense if you regularly use heavily threaded applications, stream while gaming, or want the fastest possible AM4 upgrade.
The 5800X3D will be faster, especially in CPU-limited games and multitasking, but the difference may not be very noticeable at 1440p with an RTX 5070. If you mainly game and want the best price-to-performance ratio, choose the 5500X3D; if you want extra CPU headroom and can comfortably afford it, go with the 5800X3D.
I’d wait for a better deal rather than paying $386 for the 5800X3D. The 5500X3D can be attractive around the $150–$200 range, while the older 5800X3D is difficult to justify at a large premium. Deals on newer X3D chips sometimes make waiting worthwhile.
That’s basically my plan too—I’m keeping my current 5600X until prices come down instead of spending over $300 on an AM4 upgrade.
