Is this $4,000 PC build overkill for Minecraft with maximum settings?

This is my first PC build, and I'm still learning how component specifications translate into real-world gaming performance. My main goal is to play Minecraft at maximum settings, with very long render distances and shaders enabled. The proposed build includes a Ryzen 7 9850X3D, an ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 cooler, a Gigabyte X870 EAGLE WIFI7 motherboard, 64GB of DDR5-6400 memory, a 4TB Samsung 9100 PRO PCIe 5.0 SSD, a Gigabyte AORUS MASTER RTX 5070 12GB, a Lian Li O11 VISION COMPACT case, and a 1200W be quiet! Pure Power 12 M power supply. The parts appear compatible, but the total is around $4,000, which is my spending limit. Am I missing any essential components besides the operating system, and would it make more sense to change anything for better gaming performance or value?

You’re not missing much besides the operating system and possibly additional case fans, depending on what comes with the case and cooler. The 1200W power supply is excessive for this setup; an 850W unit should be sufficient, with 1,000W providing extra headroom. Overall, the system is far beyond what Minecraft requires, so you could spend substantially less and still get excellent performance.

The graphics card and resolution matter more for shaders than buying the most expensive gaming CPU available. A 9800X3D or 7800X3D would likely be a more sensible choice, leaving room in the budget for a stronger GPU such as a 5070 Ti or 9070 XT. If you keep the current CPU, you could still adjust the GPU depending on whether you care more about ray tracing, CUDA features, or standard gaming performance.

There’s no urgent need to downgrade the CPU if the prices are close, but the RTX 5070 and 9070 XT have different strengths. The better choice depends on the games and features you plan to use beyond Minecraft.

This build will run Minecraft extremely well, but it spends a lot on parts that won’t noticeably improve gaming performance. You could use 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD unless you specifically need the extra capacity. A 9070 XT may offer better overall gaming value than the RTX 5070, and a 1,000W power supply would already be plenty.

A 9070 XT paired with a slightly slower CPU can still reach around 300 FPS in Minecraft at maximum settings with shaders, although the exact result depends heavily on resolution, shader pack, and render distance.
