I'm considering building a new AM5 system and found an online bundle priced at $549 that includes a Ryzen 5 9600X, a B850 motherboard, 16GB of RAM, and a Cooler Master Elite AIO as a bonus. I don't have access to nearby in-store bundle deals, so this looks fairly appealing. The main drawback is that the memory is only 2x8GB, and RAM prices are already high. Would this be a sensible entry-level AM5 build, or would I be better off choosing a strong AM4 or Intel DDR4 system? I'm mainly interested in getting good value now while avoiding a platform that will feel outdated in just a few years.

There isn't really a future-proof PC, and many people never upgrade their CPU, so don't pay a huge premium just for a theoretical upgrade. Still, compared with the similarly priced AM4 option, this bundle gives you a newer platform and more flexibility. I'd be comfortable with it if the total system budget leaves room to replace the 16GB kit with 32GB soon.
A cheaper Intel DDR4 build could offer similar performance for less money, but that platform also has limited upgrade potential. The 9600X may not be dramatically faster in every workload, yet AM5 is the more sensible choice if you're starting from scratch and care about having a future CPU upgrade option.
AM4 only makes much sense if you already own an AM4 motherboard and DDR4 memory. Its gaming upgrade path is essentially finished, with the 5800X3D being the practical endpoint. AM5 costs more up front, but it gives you the option of upgrading the processor later without replacing the whole platform.
For $549, the bundle is pretty reasonable considering it includes the 9600X, motherboard, 16GB of memory, and an AIO cooler. The biggest weakness is the 2x8GB RAM kit. Sixteen gigabytes is usable, but 32GB would be a much better target for a new system, and replacing the kit later may cost more than buying the right capacity now.
That makes sense. I was using “future-proof” loosely—I mainly want something that won't feel obsolete after only a few years. The AM4 savings don't seem especially large once the CPU, board, cooler, and memory are all included.
