I've used a 1080p monitor for the past five or six years and have never tried 1440p. My new PC has an RTX 5070 Ti and Ryzen 7 7800X3D, but I'm still gaming on my old display. It runs everything I play at ultra settings and a steady 144 FPS, so I'm already happy with the performance. However, people have told me that 1080p is a poor match for this hardware. Is the visual improvement from 1080p to 1440p/QHD significant enough to justify buying a new monitor? I'd prefer to stay around 24–25 inches and want at least 144Hz, since I mostly play esports-style games.

1440p is noticeably sharper, especially for text, distant objects, and fine details. At 27 inches the improvement over 1080p is very obvious, but a 24-inch 1440p screen also looks extremely crisp because of its higher pixel density. Your system can handle 1440p easily, although demanding new games may not always stay at 144 FPS on ultra settings. If you want a clear visual upgrade without moving to 4K, a 1440p 144Hz or 165Hz monitor makes sense.
The difference depends on screen size and viewing distance. A 24-inch 1080p monitor is about 92 pixels per inch, while a 24-inch 1440p monitor is around 122 PPI, so the higher-resolution model will look cleaner even without making the screen physically larger. On the other hand, 27-inch 1440p is the more common combination and gives you more workspace. Since you prefer 24–25 inches for competitive games, a high-refresh 1440p monitor is worth considering, but try to buy from somewhere with a good return policy if possible.
For esports games, staying at 24 inches and prioritizing refresh rate and motion clarity is completely reasonable. There isn't one correct resolution for everyone.
If you're happy with your current image, you don't need to upgrade just because other people say your hardware is too powerful for 1080p. At 24 inches, 1080p still has respectable pixel density and can look perfectly fine. A 5070 Ti is definitely more than you need for that resolution, but that also means it should remain useful for a very long time. Upgrade because you want a sharper image or a better panel—not because you feel pressured.
Exactly. Everyone's eyesight and preferences are different. Some people notice the difference immediately, while others care more about high frame rates and responsiveness.

I moved from 1080p to 1440p on a 24-inch display and loved the extra sharpness. For less demanding games, I barely noticed any performance loss.
