I recently upgraded my graphics card from an RX 6700 to an RX 9070 and paired it with a Ryzen 5 5600 and 32 GB of DDR4 memory. I mainly play at 1440p on an ultrawide monitor, and the GPU upgrade has nearly doubled my performance. However, in demanding game environments, my CPU sometimes reaches 100% usage, especially when enabling FSR because the lower rendering resolution shifts more of the workload toward the processor.
A Ryzen 7 5800X3D costs around $300–350, which feels too expensive since I planned to move to a newer platform in a few years. I can currently find a Ryzen 5 5600X3D for $169, though, and I may be able to sell my current 5600 for $80–90. Would the 5600X3D be a worthwhile gaming upgrade and help extend the life of my current system, or would I be better off keeping the 5600 and saving for a future platform upgrade?

For a gaming-focused system, the 5600X3D is a pretty sensible upgrade at that price. It is not a massive improvement in every game, but the extra cache can substantially improve CPU-limited performance and frame-time consistency. If selling your 5600 brings the cost down to roughly $80–100, that is a reasonable way to extend the system’s useful life.
For your specific setup, I would lean toward the 5600X3D if the low price is genuine and returns are not a concern. With a powerful RX 9070, the processor is more likely to matter in high-refresh gaming and reduced-resolution modes. It will not eliminate the need for a future platform upgrade, but it can make that upgrade unnecessary for several more years.
I would skip the upgrade if you are expecting a dramatic change in every game. The 5600 and 5600X3D have similar core counts and general-purpose performance, and the extra cache mainly helps gaming workloads that benefit from it. A better cooler or tuning your current processor might help slightly, but those options will not match the improvement the X3D model can provide in CPU-limited titles.
The biggest gains should show up in 1% lows and heavily CPU-bound games rather than in resolution itself. Your graphics card still determines most of the 1440p rendering workload, but the X3D chip can help prevent the processor from holding it back. It is also a much cheaper upgrade than changing the motherboard, memory, and CPU all at once.
Before upgrading, ask whether you are actually unhappy with the experience. If your games stay above your personal minimum frame rate and do not stutter, there may be no urgent reason to change anything. FSR lowering the resolution can expose a CPU limit, but that does not automatically mean the upgrade is necessary. The 5600X3D could provide anywhere from little improvement to around 30% in CPU-bound games, so the value depends heavily on what you play.

I judge it by whether performance stays above my minimum acceptable frame rate and remains smooth. If it does, chasing benchmark numbers is not very useful. Still, getting the 5600X3D for about $80 after selling the old chip would be a reasonable longevity upgrade.
