My younger brother has a Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 5070, and 32GB of DDR4 paired with a 1440p 165Hz monitor. My girlfriend has a Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 4070 Ti Super, and 32GB of DDR4 connected to a 4K 60Hz TV. I live near a Micro Center and can buy a 5600X3D for about $180 after tax or a 5800X3D for around $320. I could probably sell the existing 5600X for roughly $100. For gaming, would either upgrade be worthwhile, and which one offers the better value?

If you want the fastest possible AM4 gaming chip, the 5800X3D is technically the top option. That said, paying an extra $140 for it usually isn’t worthwhile when the 5600X3D is available for $180. I’d only choose the 5800X3D if you specifically need its additional CPU cores or want the absolute maximum performance without changing platforms.
The upgrade makes more sense for your brother, since the 1440p/165Hz setup can benefit from a faster gaming CPU. Your girlfriend’s 4K/60Hz system is much more likely to be GPU-limited, and the regular 5600X should already handle most games at 60 FPS. I’d put the 5600X3D in the 1440p machine and leave the 4K system alone unless a particular game is showing CPU-related performance issues.
The 5600X3D is the better value by far. For gaming it performs very close to the 5800X3D, while costing much less. At 1440p, the extra 3D V-Cache should provide a noticeable improvement over the regular 5600X, especially for high-refresh gaming.
