I'm currently running a Ryzen 5 5600X on an MSI MAG X570S Tomahawk Max with 32GB of DDR4-3600 CL16 memory, an RTX 3080 12GB, and a 1440p monitor. The system still handles most of my games well, and I'd prefer extending this platform rather than paying for a complete rebuild while hardware prices remain high.
A local retailer has the Ryzen 7 5800X3D discounted, and I also have a $50 coupon, bringing the final price to about $250. I could sell my 5600X afterward, lowering the effective cost further.
I'm especially interested in performance improvements in Helldivers 2, BeamNG, Forza Horizon 6, Cyberpunk 2077, and Battlefield 6. Would the 5800X3D provide noticeable gains at 1440p, particularly better frame-time consistency and 1% lows? Is it a worthwhile way to extend the life of my current AM4 build, or would I be better off saving for a newer DDR5 platform?

A newer DDR5 platform would offer a longer upgrade path, but it would also require a motherboard, memory, and CPU. For your stated goal of avoiding a complete rebuild, the 5800X3D makes much more sense at this price. Just make sure your cooler is adequate, and check BIOS settings after the swap since memory profiles and fan curves may need to be re-enabled.
The main limitation is that games which are already GPU-bound at 1440p won’t gain much average FPS. Even there, though, the extra cache can improve frame pacing. In CPU-limited titles like BeamNG and Helldivers 2, the improvement should be more obvious. I’d treat $250 minus whatever you recover from the 5600X as a very reasonable final AM4 upgrade.
At $250, especially after selling the 5600X, it’s a very strong upgrade. You only need to replace the CPU, and the 5800X3D should give you substantially better 1% lows and smoother performance in CPU-heavy games. BeamNG and Forza should benefit particularly well, and Cyberpunk can also see meaningful gains in busy areas with lots of NPCs. It’s probably the best way to get more life out of your current system without paying for a full rebuild.
That price is excellent for a new 5800X3D. The 5800X3D was already one of the strongest gaming upgrades available for AM4, and your RTX 3080 is still capable enough to pair with it well at 1440p. I’d buy it if the goal is to keep this build for several more years.
It’s also likely to be one of the last opportunities to buy one new, so waiting may not lead to a better deal.
Cyberpunk isn’t just a marginal improvement either; CPU-heavy areas such as Dogtown and crowded city sections can show noticeable gains from the extra cache.
