I'm currently using a Ryzen 7 5800X with an RTX 5070 and an ultrawide 1440p monitor. In PUBG, GPU usage sits around 40%, with FPS dropping to roughly 120 in busy areas and cities but reaching around 300 elsewhere. Would switching to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D noticeably improve the lows and overall smoothness? I can sell my 5800X for about $150 and buy a 5800X3D for around $300, so the upgrade would cost me approximately $150. Is that difference worth it?

The low GPU usage strongly suggests you’re CPU-limited in those busy areas, so the 5800X3D should help PUBG’s frame rates and especially the dips. The improvement won’t be the same everywhere, though—expect the biggest gains in CPU-bound situations rather than a huge increase to your maximum FPS.
A 5800X3D is typically around 10–20% faster than a 5800X in CPU-limited games, with the extra cache often helping games like PUBG. It could make the experience smoother, but paying $150 for the upgrade is more of a nice-to-have than a guaranteed dramatic transformation.
I’d only make the swap if you can definitely sell the 5800X and want better frame-time consistency. Before installing the 5800X3D, update your motherboard BIOS so it properly supports the chip. Also compare benchmarks using your exact resolution and settings before deciding.
At 1440p ultrawide, the GPU may become the limit in some situations, but crowded areas can still be heavily CPU-bound.
