I'm currently using a Ryzen 7 5800X with an RTX 5070 Ti, and the system performs well in most games. However, some newer Unreal Engine 5 titles—especially Mortal Shell 2—have noticeable frame-time stuttering. Would moving to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D be worthwhile mainly for the extra 3D V-Cache and potentially smoother gameplay? I'd prefer not to spend more than about $1,000 rebuilding around DDR5 and a new platform. My target is 1440p at roughly 100 Hz, if that affects the recommendation.

For stuttering, the X3D chip’s stronger 1% lows may matter more than its average FPS. Some games can even run similarly or slightly better on the regular 5800X, but the X3D generally delivers more consistent frame pacing. Still, shader compilation, game patches, and Unreal Engine streaming can also cause stutter, so a CPU upgrade may not completely solve it.
It’s a reasonable drop-in upgrade if you want to keep your current motherboard and memory, and selling the 5800X would reduce the cost. However, 5800X3D prices can be high enough that the value is questionable. I’d only consider it if you find a good deal and specifically want to extend the life of the AM4 system.
I’d probably save the money and make a larger platform upgrade later. AM5 gives you a newer CPU platform and an upgrade path, while buying an expensive 5800X3D leaves you at the end of AM4. If an AM5 bundle with a Ryzen 5 7600 or similar costs close to the 5800X3D upgrade, that’s worth considering, even if you start with a modest amount of DDR5 memory.
The 5800X3D can improve gaming performance and, more importantly, frame-time consistency in quite a few titles. That said, the improvement varies by game, and there doesn’t seem to be a reliable direct benchmark for Mortal Shell 2. At 1440p, the benefit may be smaller if the RTX 5070 Ti is the limiting factor.
A lower-cost X3D option could also make sense if one is available locally, such as a Ryzen 5 5600X3D or 5500X3D. Those won’t necessarily outperform the 5800X in every situation, but their extra cache can improve lows and smoothness in cache-sensitive games. Otherwise, waiting for a future GPU and doing a complete rebuild is probably the better value.
