I'm running a Core i9-12900K with 32GB of DDR5 and a 1440p 240Hz monitor. I play a mix of demanding AAA games and competitive titles. My RTX 4070 still handles lighter games well and runs everything, but it often doesn't fully utilize the monitor's refresh rate. Would upgrading to an RTX 5080 make a noticeable difference at 1440p, or would the money be better spent elsewhere?

First figure out whether the 4070 is actually keeping you from enjoying your games. If it still gives you smooth performance and good image quality, there’s no urgent reason to upgrade. If you specifically want to push closer to 240Hz in demanding games, the 5080 would help, but it’s more of a luxury upgrade than a necessity.
The RTX 5080 is roughly 66% faster and has more VRAM, so the performance increase is real. Whether it’s worth the price depends on your budget and how much you value higher settings and frame rates. At 1440p, you’ll notice it most in demanding AAA games and when using ray tracing, while your 4070 may already be sufficient for many competitive titles.
So the difference should still be noticeable at 1440p, not just at 4K?
The 5080 can be a worthwhile upgrade if you have the budget and want to keep the card for several years. Features like improved frame generation can make high-resolution gaming feel much smoother, especially on an ultrawide or 4K display. Just keep in mind that generated frames don’t replace the need for strong base FPS, particularly in competitive games.
For competitive games, your 12900K may be the limiting factor before an RTX 5080 is. A newer gaming-focused CPU, such as a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with the required platform upgrade, could provide a bigger improvement in very high-FPS competitive titles. The 5080 makes more sense if your priority is higher settings, ray tracing, or better performance in visually demanding games.
