I'm preparing to trade in some PC hardware, so I ran MemTest86 last night. It reported around 250 errors after only three passes, even though the computer seems to work normally day to day. Is it safe or reasonable to send the parts in anyway, or should I troubleshoot and replace something first? Any advice would be appreciated.

Test each RAM stick separately, using the motherboard’s normal default speed and timings. If one stick produces errors on its own, you’ve likely found the bad module. If both pass individually but fail together, check the slots, memory settings, BIOS, and possible motherboard or CPU issues.
If the RAM was purchased as a kit, check its warranty. Many memory kits include lifetime coverage, so replacing or warranty-returning the defective module may be a better option than trading it in with known errors.
A properly working memory setup should produce zero MemTest86 errors. Even if the system appears stable, memory errors can cause occasional crashes or silently corrupt files. Most reputable trade-in services will test the hardware themselves, so it’s better to identify and disclose the problem rather than send it in as fully working.
A retailer may not run such an extensive test during a trade-in, but that doesn’t make the faulty memory safe to pass along. The errors still need to be taken seriously.

I’m hoping the issue turns out to be the older CPU or motherboard since those would have less trade-in value, but I’ll test the sticks individually first.
