I'm putting together a gaming PC with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Radeon RX 9070 XT. The MSI X870E Gaming Plus and MSI B850 Gaming Plus are currently the same price, and both have been recommended to me. Which board makes more sense for this build, or should I consider a different motherboard?

Either board should handle that CPU and graphics card without a problem. The main difference is how the extra connectivity is provided. A Ryzen processor has direct connections for memory, the graphics slot, and a few additional devices. Other features—such as Ethernet, most USB ports, SATA, audio, Wi-Fi, and additional storage—run through the motherboard chipset and share its link to the processor. The X870E generally gives you more high-speed connectivity, while the B850 may offer a second direct NVMe slot instead of some of those features.
For this particular gaming build, I’d probably choose the B850 if both boards have the features you need. The 9800X3D and 9070 XT won’t perform noticeably differently on either motherboard, so the X870E is mainly worth it if you specifically need extra USB4, more expansion, or additional high-bandwidth storage. If the B850 is genuinely the same price, compare the exact Wi-Fi, M.2, USB, and power-delivery specifications before deciding.
I’m building the system from scratch and mostly wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing an important advantage. I’ll compare the storage and USB features and choose based on what I actually need.
