My Galaxy phone gave me a delayed alert saying an unknown AirTag was detected around 11:20 in the morning. The map shows a trail along the road for several miles all the way to my house. When I got home from work around 10:50 p.m., it detected the AirTag again and showed my house on the map. No one in our household uses Apple devices. I tried connecting to the tag and occasionally got the option to connect, but it usually said the AirTag was too far away. My wife's phone had the same issue. How can I tell whether this is a delayed detection from passing near someone else's AirTag or whether the tracker is actually nearby?

It may belong to someone nearby, such as a person in another car or someone carrying a bag. AirTags have limited Bluetooth range, and Android tracking alerts can be delayed, so the map may show where your phone encountered it earlier rather than where it is now. If the trail ends away from your home and the tag cannot be reached, it may no longer be nearby.
Try turning Bluetooth off and back on, restarting the phone, and walking slowly around the house and vehicles. The signal can disappear behind a car body or other obstruction. If neither phone can connect while you search nearby, that supports the idea that the alert was delayed or came from an AirTag you passed earlier. Also check whether the map’s last detection point actually ends at your house or only shows an older route passing through it.
A pet belonging to a neighbor could also explain the route if it regularly travels near your street. The important distinction is whether the tracker continues appearing at your home after you have searched the cars and belongings. Repeated current detections in different places would be more concerning than one delayed alert.
Still, check carefully before dismissing it. Look through both vehicles, bags, coats, luggage, and around the outside or underside of the cars. If you find an unfamiliar tracker, use the phone’s option to make it play a sound, document where you found it, and contact local authorities if you believe someone placed it there intentionally.

The phone offers to play a sound sometimes, but then says the AirTag is too far away. I’ll check both vehicles and our bags.
