My computer suddenly stopped detecting my SATA SSD. I removed it, connected it through a USB-to-SATA adapter, and tried it with a Linux laptop, but it still wasn't recognized. While connected, the drive or adapter began making a buzzing sound. The SSD looks normal externally, and I don't have equipment to measure its power draw. I understand that the drive may be dead, but what failure could cause this noise, and is there anything worth trying before replacing it?

The advice about leaving free space is mainly for performance and endurance; filling the drive completely usually does not directly cause a sudden buzzing, undetectable failure. Regardless of the cause, the practical next steps are to check a different cable and adapter once, then stop testing if the noise continues. If the files are important, use a professional recovery service; otherwise, replace the SSD and keep separate backups.
Electronic components simply fail sometimes—controllers, NAND, solder joints, and power circuitry can all go bad without leaving visible damage. Heat, manufacturing defects, age, or just bad luck may be involved. The brand and the fact that it only lasted a couple of years don’t prove one specific cause, and the outside can look perfectly normal even when the controller has failed.
SSDs have no motors or other moving parts, so a buzzing sound usually comes from the USB-to-SATA adapter or from a failing power component on the drive. A shorted or damaged controller, capacitor, or voltage regulator can cause the power circuitry to vibrate or repeatedly shut down and restart. Don’t keep powering it if the data matters, since repeated attempts can make recovery harder.

It was a Kingston drive, and it was purchased around April 2024, so I was surprised it failed this quickly.
