PC crashes every few hours despite replacing nearly every component—could the motherboard be faulty?

My PC has been crashing at regular intervals for months. It originally failed roughly every four hours, but the interval has recently dropped to about two and a half hours. A repair shop tested the system and replaced every major component except the Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU, but the crashes continued. The failures happen during gaming, while idle in standby, and even during memory testing. I also installed the CPU in a friend's computer, where it ran for more than four hours without crashing, then put it back in my own system and the problem returned. I've reinstalled Windows several times and cleaned the CPU with rubbing alcohol before reinstalling it. Should I buy another CPU, or are there better tests to determine whether the motherboard, BIOS settings, power delivery, or something else is responsible?

Try disabling CPU C-States in the BIOS as a troubleshooting step. Some systems become unstable when switching between low-power idle states, which could explain crashes that happen both during use and while the PC is idle.

I think I may have tried disabling C-States before, but I'll repeat the test to make sure it was actually applied and compare the results.

Since the CPU worked normally in another computer, I wouldn't spend money on a replacement CPU yet. Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System for WHEA-Logger hardware errors and Kernel-Power 41 entries, and inspect any minidumps. Also update the motherboard BIOS, test with EXPO disabled, check the SoC voltage, and verify the PSU's 12V output. Run MemTest86 with only one memory stick installed at a time. The evidence points more toward the motherboard socket, power delivery, BIOS, or memory configuration than the processor itself.

I've already checked most of those items, but I haven't looked into EXPO, SoC voltage, or the PSU's 12V rail. I'll investigate those next.

The motherboard is a strong suspect. A CPU that remains stable in a different system but crashes in yours suggests the board, socket contact, firmware, or power circuitry may be causing the issue. Try running completely stock BIOS settings, update the BIOS, and test with one RAM module before buying another processor.

The fact that it works in your friend's PC is useful evidence, but it doesn't prove the CPU is perfect under every possible workload. Still, because the failure follows your original motherboard and not the processor when you swap systems, the motherboard and its settings should be investigated before replacing the CPU.
