I'm setting up a Dell PowerEdge T40 for the first time and trying to install Windows 11 on a brand-new SATA drive. Windows Setup cannot find any storage device, and the BIOS shows SATA-0 through SATA-3 as Type: "(none)" with Device ID: "(none)." SATA mode is already set to AHCI. I've checked that the data and power cables appear to be seated, and I tried loading Intel RST drivers during Windows Setup, but that didn't help. Since the BIOS cannot detect the drive at all, I'm guessing this is a hardware, cabling, power, or configuration issue rather than a Windows driver problem. What should I check next?

If the BIOS reports every SATA port as empty, Windows drivers won’t make the drive appear. Shut the system down completely, reseat both the SATA data and power connections, and check the system configuration menu to make sure the ports are enabled. You can also try another SATA cable, another port, or a known-good drive to narrow down whether the problem is the drive or the server.
A powered mechanical drive will usually produce a slight vibration when it starts, so checking that can confirm whether it is receiving power. If it is powered but still missing from the BIOS, focus on the data cable, port, or drive itself. Also use UEFI boot mode for a modern Windows 11 installation.
Thanks for the suggestions. I eventually realized the actual problem: I hadn’t installed a hard drive in the server at all. Once I noticed that, everything made sense.
