Random Hard Freezes After Adding an 8GB RAM Stick to an i9 Mini PC

My Windows 11 mini PC with an Intel Core i9-12900HK and integrated Iris Xe graphics has started completely freezing at random. The display locks up, audio and input stop responding, and I have to hold the power button for about five seconds to shut it down. It has happened more than ten times.

The problem began after I added an 8GB RAM module alongside the original 16GB module, giving me 24GB in Flex mode. Performance improved noticeably in games such as CS2 and Fortnite, but the system sometimes freezes during gaming and sometimes shortly after a cold boot while sitting on the desktop. There is no blue screen or obvious temperature-related pattern.

Could the different RAM capacities, timings, or memory profiles be causing instability? Would replacing the 8GB module with a matching 16GB stick and running a 32GB matched kit likely fix it? What tests should I run to determine whether the issue is the RAM, BIOS settings, or another component?

Reset the BIOS to its default settings and disable any XMP or memory-overclocking profile before testing. Then run a bootable memory test such as MemTest86 or several passes of Windows Memory Diagnostic. A single pass is not always enough. Also install the latest BIOS and chipset updates from the mini PC manufacturer. If it freezes with either module by itself, the module or the system's memory slot may be faulty; if it only freezes when both are installed, compatibility or memory timings are much more likely.

Since these are hard locks rather than blue screens, there may not be any useful minidump files. Check Event Viewer for critical errors after rebooting, but focus on isolating the hardware first. Run the system for a while with only the original 16GB installed, then test only the added 8GB. Keep the RAM at standard JEDEC settings while troubleshooting and make sure the module is fully seated. A matched 32GB kit is the cleanest long-term solution, though it is worth testing first so you do not replace parts unnecessarily.

Mixed memory is the first thing I would suspect, especially when the crashes started immediately after the upgrade. The 16GB and 8GB modules may have different timings, voltage requirements, memory chips, or SPD settings. Flex mode itself is supported, so using 16GB plus 8GB is not automatically wrong, but mismatched modules can still be unstable. Test with the original stick alone, then the new stick alone, and compare the results. If possible, replace them with a matched 2x16GB kit made for the mini PC.
