RTX 5070 or RX 9070 XT at the Same Price for Gaming in 2026?

I'm trying to decide whether to keep a recently purchased RTX 5070 or return it and get an RX 9070 XT instead. Both cards cost the same where I live, while an RTX 5070 Ti is around 70% more expensive and isn't an option. The RX 9070 XT appears to offer roughly 15–25% more rasterization performance and has 16GB of VRAM, while the RTX 5070 has 12GB. Nvidia offers stronger DLSS, ray reconstruction, frame generation support, Reflex, DLDSR, and broader compatibility. AMD seems better for raw performance and longevity, but I'm concerned about driver stability, FSR support, frame pacing, and whether future features will be limited to newer architectures. For primarily gaming, especially at 1440p or occasionally 4K, which card would you choose?

Keep the RTX 5070 if you want the simplest plug-and-play experience and regularly play games with strong DLSS or ray-tracing support. Nvidia still has the broader feature and game-support ecosystem, and its frame generation and latency features are polished. However, don't buy the 5070 based on rumored future features—there is no guarantee they will run well on this card, especially with only 12GB of VRAM.

Since you already have the 5070, the upgrade is not automatically worthwhile. If it is working well and you mainly play competitive games or DLSS-heavy titles, avoiding a return, driver cleanup, and reinstall may be worth more than roughly 20% extra performance. If the cards are still returnable and you mainly want the best gaming performance per dollar, switch to the 9070 XT.

Driver reports are mixed, but several owners have used the 9070 XT without meaningful problems. Some games may need a settings change or a driver update to resolve stuttering, so AMD can involve a little more troubleshooting. In general, the decision comes down to priorities: 9070 XT for raster performance and VRAM, RTX 5070 for software support, ray tracing, latency features, and productivity.

For gaming at the same price, the RX 9070 XT is the clear performance and value choice. It is generally closer to an RTX 5070 Ti than to a regular 5070, and the extra 4GB of VRAM should help it age better. The RTX 5070 only makes more sense if you specifically prioritize DLSS, ray tracing, Reflex, CUDA, or certain productivity and AI applications.

The 9070 XT is the better choice for native-resolution gaming and demanding future titles. Its extra raster performance and 16GB memory are more useful than chasing frame-generation numbers, particularly if you plan to keep the card for several years. FSR support is not as universal as DLSS, but newer games are adding it and modding tools can fill some gaps if you are willing to tinker.
