Should I Build or Buy a Budget Gaming PC in Australia?

I've been playing on a PS5, but I'm increasingly frustrated with lag, overheating, and the overall experience. I've wanted to switch to PC gaming for a while, but I'm not sure where to begin or whether building a PC myself is realistic for a beginner.

My budget is roughly AUD 1,500, though I could potentially spend a little more. I'm considering either buying a prebuilt system or purchasing parts gradually and assembling the computer myself with the help of tutorials. I don't need a high-end or ultra-powerful machine—just a reliable, budget-friendly gaming PC for playing in my spare time.

Since I'm located in Australia, any recommended parts or prebuilt systems need to be available locally or able to ship here. Is building usually better value than buying a prebuilt at this price, and what kind of performance should I realistically expect?

The first thing to pin down is your total budget in Australian dollars, including Windows, Wi-Fi if needed, and possibly a monitor or other peripherals. Around AUD 1,500 is generally entry-level territory, so it’s worth deciding which games and resolution you’re targeting before choosing parts.

I’m thinking roughly AUD 1,500, maybe a bit more if necessary. I could buy parts over time, but I’m still unsure what a realistic budget is for a decent starter PC.

Used hardware is another option, although older parts have become more expensive because they still offer good value for budget builds. If you buy second-hand, test the system where possible and check the exact graphics card, processor, power supply, and storage models rather than relying only on a general listing.

At the moment, prebuilts can offer better value in Australia because system builders buy components in bulk and sometimes run worthwhile sales. Check reputable local retailers and deal sites regularly, since prices vary a lot. A budget of about AUD 1,500 will likely get you an entry-level gaming system rather than a high-end build.

Building it yourself can still be rewarding, but don’t assume it will automatically be cheaper. Compare the complete cost of the parts with current prebuilt deals, including delivery and warranties.
