I'm deciding between an RTX 4090 and an RTX 5080 for a high-end gaming build. An RTX 5090 is out of reach because listings around $5,000 CAD are far too expensive. RTX 5080 models range from roughly $1,700 to $2,800 CAD, while RTX 4090 cards generally cost at least $3,000 and may be used.
What are the main advantages and disadvantages of each card? Which one would you choose, and why?

I’d buy whichever is significantly cheaper, since both cards are excellent for gaming. At 1440p or a 60 FPS target, the difference may be hard to notice, so the 4090’s extra performance would be wasted for some users. For unrestricted 4K gaming and long-term VRAM headroom, choose the 4090; for value, efficiency, warranty coverage, and newer features, choose the 5080. Also make sure the rest of the system—especially the CPU and RAM—won’t limit either card.
The RTX 4090 is faster overall and has 24GB of VRAM compared with the 5080’s 16GB. That extra memory can matter in heavily modded or demanding 4K games with maximum textures, and it should age better. It also tends to have a noticeable advantage in ray tracing and path tracing.
The RTX 5080 is newer, usually cheaper, more power-efficient, and comes with a warranty if you buy it new. It also supports newer features such as Multi Frame Generation and has newer display connectivity. If the 4090 costs substantially more, the 5080 is probably the better value.
If price is irrelevant, I’d pick the 4090 because it is simply the more capable GPU. However, a used 4090 at $3,000 CAD or more is difficult to justify unless you specifically need the extra VRAM or maximum 4K performance. A new 5080 gives you a warranty, lower power consumption, newer features, and much less risk.
Multi Frame Generation can be useful, but it doesn’t replace real GPU performance and may introduce artifacts or latency. I’d treat it as a bonus rather than the main reason to choose the 5080.
Some later 4090 models did use the revised 12V-2x6 connector, but the card’s power connector and possible failure history are still worth considering when buying used.
