I have been using an RTX 3070 for about four years, but it struggles with newer games on my 4K monitor, especially demanding ray-traced titles such as 007: First Light. I am building a new PC and already have every component except the graphics card. A Gigabyte RTX 5080 Gaming OC currently costs around £1,220, compared with roughly £1,150 before the recent AI-driven price increases. I expect GPU and memory prices may become more reasonable by late 2027 or early 2028, and estimates suggest the RTX 6080 could cost another £250–£350 while offering around 30% more performance. Would an RTX 5080 be a sensible purchase that could last until the 70-series cards, or would it be better to keep using the RTX 3070 and wait for the 6080? I would prefer to keep playing at 4K rather than lowering the resolution.

If you buy the 5080 now, it should provide a substantial upgrade over the 3070 and make 4K gaming much more practical. You can always sell it later if the 6080 turns out to be compelling, and a high-end current card should retain some resale value. I would base the decision on whether you are happy with the current price-to-performance ratio, not on speculative future pricing.
I would not assume prices will definitely fall by 2027 or 2028. Supply problems can improve, but manufacturers do not always reduce prices, and AI demand could continue affecting memory and GPU availability. If your 3070 is still acceptable at reduced settings, waiting is a gamble that could pay off. If 4K quality is already making games unpleasant, buying now is more practical than waiting for an unknown release.
Before committing to the 5080, compare AMD options such as the RX 9070 XT. It may cost considerably less while still being a major upgrade from the 3070. The 5080 makes more sense if you specifically need Nvidia features, stronger ray tracing, or technologies such as CUDA and DLSS; otherwise, the cheaper card could leave room in the budget for a future upgrade.
