I'm upgrading from an RX 6700 XT and comparing two local options: an RX 7800 XT for 550 CAD or an RX 9070 GRE for 784 CAD after tax. Which card offers the better value, and is the newer architecture worth paying the extra 234 CAD for?

The RX 7800 XT is the easy value pick here. The gaming performance is fairly close, but saving 234 CAD is a significant difference. It should also be a solid upgrade from your RX 6700 XT.
The 9070 GRE has the advantage of newer architecture, better efficiency, and newer features, so it may receive updates and feature support for longer. However, the price premium is hard to justify unless you plan to keep the card for many years or specifically want those newer features. At 550 CAD versus 784 CAD, I’d buy the 7800 XT.
The two cards are close enough in performance that I’d normally choose whichever is cheaper. The 7800 XT also has more VRAM, which can help with higher resolutions and future games.
