I'm putting together a new PC and am deciding between two used AMD graphics cards. One seller has a Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 7800 XT for $375, while another is offering a PowerColor Hellhound RGB RX 9070 XT for $650. Best Buy also has an open-box RX 9070 XT listed in fair condition for $640. I'm planning to dual-boot Linux and Windows, so I prefer AMD graphics. My current parts are a Ryzen 7 5800XT, Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2 motherboard, and Corsair RM750e 750W power supply. I may upgrade the rest of the system later. Which graphics card and purchase option makes the most sense?

I’d lean toward trying the Best Buy RX 9070 XT, assuming the return policy applies to that listing. The extra cost gets you a much newer and faster card than the RX 7800 XT, while buying locally from a marketplace seller can be risky if there’s no receipt or warranty. Test for crashes, artifacting, unusual fan noise, and excessive coil whine during the return period.
The Best Buy open-box RX 9070 XT is probably the safest choice because you should have a return window and some form of store protection. Just inspect it carefully when you pick it up and test it soon after buying. “Fair” condition could mean cosmetic damage, missing accessories, or a previous return, so don’t assume it’s guaranteed to be perfect.
My main concern is that it might be missing something important or have a hidden problem. I know I can return it, but I’m not sure what I should check to catch issues right away.

A warranty may still be possible with proof of purchase, but marketplace sellers often don’t have the receipt or don’t want to provide it. That makes the store-backed open-box option more appealing even if it costs a little more.
