Should I Choose a 1440p or 4K OLED Monitor for This High-End Gaming PC?

I'm putting together a high-end gaming PC with an ASUS TUF X870-PLUS WIFI motherboard, Ryzen 9 9950X3D, RTX 5080 16GB, and 32GB of 6000MHz RAM. I'm now trying to decide between a 4K and 1440p gaming monitor, with a budget of roughly €500–€1,000.

The system should handle 4K gaming well, but I'm concerned that demanding games such as Cyberpunk 2077, or busy online games with lots of players and effects, may require reduced settings or result in lower frame rates at 4K. Because of that, I was considering 1440p as a compromise between image quality and performance.

I'm currently looking at the ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDPG, a 27-inch high-refresh-rate 1440p OLED. Would 1440p be a sensible choice with this hardware, or would a 4K OLED make better use of the RTX 5080? Is 4K noticeably worthwhile at 27 inches, or is it better suited to a larger 32-inch display?

1440p is still a completely reasonable choice. It will make it easier to reach very high refresh rates and keep demanding games smooth at high settings. If you care more about competitive performance and fluidity than maximum image sharpness, the 1440p OLED you listed should be excellent and you’re unlikely to regret it.

With an RTX 5080, I’d lean toward a 4K OLED, especially for single-player games. You can always optimize a few settings, use DLSS, or enable frame generation when needed rather than lowering the display resolution from the start. A 4K panel will also look very sharp at 27 inches, although 32 inches gives you a more immersive size.

The choice mostly depends on what you want to notice while gaming. 4K gives you a cleaner, sharper image, while 1440p gives the GPU more headroom for high frame rates. Your CPU and GPU are more than capable of 1440p, but that doesn’t make it a bad pairing—just means you’re prioritizing speed over resolution. A 240Hz-or-faster OLED at 1440p would be a strong option.

At 27 inches, 4K still has a clear pixel-density advantage, even if some people prefer 32 inches for the larger viewing area. A 32-inch 4K OLED is often the sweet spot for immersion, but a 27-inch 4K screen can look extremely crisp. I’d choose based on whether you prefer a compact sharp display or a larger cinematic one.

That was my concern too—I had assumed 4K only really made sense above 32 inches. It sounds like 27-inch 4K can still be worthwhile, though the larger screen may be better for immersion.
