I currently have an RTX 3060 Ti and an i5-13400F, and I have about 2,100 AUD to spend on a gaming upgrade. I'm deciding between buying a base RTX 5080 for roughly 2,000 AUD or getting an RTX 5070 Ti alongside a faster processor such as the i7-14700K. My main target is 1440p gaming, including demanding AAA games and CPU-heavy titles like Minecraft with shaders. I'm already using an LGA1700 motherboard and would prefer not to replace the motherboard and RAM right now. Which upgrade would give me the better overall experience?

If you were building from scratch, an X3D processor would be an excellent gaming choice, but changing from LGA1700 would also mean buying a new motherboard and possibly new memory. Since you want to keep your current platform, the practical choice is a 5070 Ti with your existing 13400F. You should be GPU-limited at 1440p, and you can upgrade the processor later if Minecraft or other CPU-heavy games show a clear bottleneck.
The i7-14700K is still a very capable gaming CPU, but it runs hot and uses considerably more power than the 13400F. It can make sense as an LGA1700 upgrade, especially in CPU-heavy games, but it won’t compensate for choosing a significantly weaker GPU in most 1440p AAA titles. Make sure your motherboard BIOS, cooler, and power supply can handle it.
I’ve used a 14700-class processor and it performs extremely well, but the cooling requirements are definitely higher. For a gaming-only system, I’d avoid paying extra for it unless benchmarks show that the 13400F is limiting your frame rate.
I’d lean toward the RTX 5070 Ti, or possibly an RX 9070 XT if you’re comfortable with AMD. The RTX 5080 is difficult to justify at around 2,000 AUD because its pricing is so high. Upgrade the graphics card first, then check whether your 13400F is actually limiting performance before replacing the CPU.
That makes sense. I’m mainly interested in Nvidia features, so I’ll compare the 5070 Ti pricing and see whether the 13400F is holding me back first.

I’d rather avoid the cost of a new motherboard and DDR5 right now, so staying on LGA1700 is important. I’ll prioritize the GPU and only consider a CPU upgrade if testing shows I need one.
