I'm currently using a Core i5-10600K and want to upgrade. I already have an MSI MPG Z790 Gaming Edge WiFi motherboard available, which would make a Core i5-14600K upgrade less expensive. The newer Core Ultra 5 250K would require moving to the newer Z890 platform. I can afford either option, and I plan to use the same RAM with whichever CPU I choose. Which upgrade makes more sense for performance, cost, and longevity?

Go with the Core Ultra 5 250K if you’re starting from scratch and care about staying on a newer socket. It costs more because of the Z890 motherboard requirement, but it gives you a more current platform and a longer upgrade path. The 14600K makes more sense when minimizing the total cost is the priority.
The 14600K uses the LGA1700 platform, while the Core Ultra 5 250K uses LGA1851 and a Z890 motherboard. Neither chip can be installed in your current 10600K motherboard, which uses LGA1200. If you already have the Z790 board and compatible DDR5 memory, the 14600K is the cheaper and simpler upgrade. If you’re buying a new board and RAM anyway, the 250K is the newer platform with better future upgrade potential.
I’d lean toward the 14600K if the Z790 motherboard is already in hand. It’s still a strong gaming CPU, and putting the saved money toward a graphics card or keeping it for a later platform upgrade may provide more noticeable results. You can also reuse DDR4 only if the specific Z790 board supports it; otherwise you’ll need DDR5.
Also double-check the exact Z790 model and RAM support. Some Z790 boards use DDR4, while others use DDR5, and the Core Ultra platform requires DDR5.
