Should I choose the Core Ultra 270K Plus or i9-14900K for a long-term productivity build?

I currently have a Ryzen 5 3600 in a B550 Tomahawk Max WiFi system with 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3600 CL18, an RTX 3060 Ti, and a 750W power supply driving two 1080p 180Hz monitors. I want a major CPU upgrade for productivity and physics-degree workloads, with the goal of keeping the system through a degree and hopefully a master's.

My two options are:

1. Core Ultra 270K Plus for €340, an MSI MPG X890 Edge WiFi motherboard for €225, and 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6400 for €290. Total: €855, or roughly €630 after selling my current CPU and motherboard.

2. Core i9-14900K for €380, an ASUS ROG Strix Z790 Gaming A D4 motherboard for €295, while reusing my existing DDR4. Total: €675, or roughly €450 after selling my current CPU and motherboard. I could later expand the DDR4 system to 32GB or 48GB.

The newer platform costs more and means I cannot reuse my sentimental DDR4 kit, while the 14900K option is cheaper and makes better use of my current memory. However, I care more about productivity, reliability, efficiency, and long-term value than gaming performance. How do these options compare, especially if I use slower or higher-latency DDR5 such as 5600–6000 CL38/40?

I’d lean toward the 270K Plus setup. You get a newer platform, newer cores, better efficiency, and DDR5 bandwidth, which makes more sense for a system you want to keep for several years. It also avoids putting a large amount of money into an older DDR4 platform. Your current system is still usable as a backup, home server, or hand-me-down instead of forcing yourself to part it out.

That makes sense. My main hesitation is buying a relatively slow DDR5 kit and not being able to reuse the Trident Z Royal memory I already own.

The 14900K option is cheaper and lets you reuse your existing memory, but it is an older, hotter platform and there have been well-known concerns about instability and degradation when these chips were run with excessive voltage. You should only choose it if the lower upfront cost and future DDR4 capacity are more important than efficiency and platform age.

The DDR4 compatibility is the main reason I keep considering it, since I spent quite a bit on the current kit and could expand it later.

It may also be worth checking current Ryzen 9 pricing before deciding. A Ryzen 9 system could offer strong productivity performance while leaving room for a later CPU upgrade on the same platform, which may provide better long-term value than either of these effectively end-of-road choices.

The 270K Plus should be the better overall choice for this use case. It is newer, appears to have fewer reliability concerns than the 14900K generation, and should handle heavily threaded productivity workloads very well. Even if the DDR5 kit is not the fastest available, 5600–6000 MT/s memory should still be reasonable; capacity may matter more than chasing very tight timings for many scientific workloads.

I was also wondering whether 5600–6000 CL38 or CL40 would noticeably hold the processor back compared with faster DDR5.
