I'm planning to upgrade from an RTX 4060 and am considering either an RTX 5060 Ti with 8GB of VRAM or an RX 9060 XT with 16GB. The 5060 Ti is somewhat faster and offers Nvidia-specific features, but I'm concerned that 8GB of VRAM may become a serious limitation for newer games. I'd like this upgrade to last around three years, so would the 9060 XT's extra memory make it the better long-term choice?

For a three-year lifespan, the RX 9060 XT 16GB is the safer choice. The RTX 5060 Ti may be slightly faster in some situations and has stronger Nvidia features, but 8GB of VRAM is already becoming restrictive in demanding games, especially at 1440p. The 9060 XT’s extra memory should help it maintain smoother performance as texture sizes and system requirements increase.
The upgrade from an RTX 4060 to a 9060 XT may only be around a moderate performance jump, so make sure the price difference feels worthwhile. Still, between the two cards you listed, I’d avoid the 8GB 5060 Ti for a long-term gaming build. The extra VRAM on the 9060 XT is more important than a small lead in average performance.
I’d go with the 9060 XT 16GB unless you specifically need Nvidia features such as CUDA, certain ray-tracing workloads, or DLSS. Its 16GB memory buffer gives it much more breathing room, and current upscaling support on the AMD card is competitive enough for normal gaming. It also tends to offer better value for the money.
If your budget can stretch further, it may be worth comparing a 9070 or 9070 GRE as well. Depending on local pricing, one of those cards can offer a substantial performance increase over the 9060 XT and may be a better upgrade from an RTX 4060. The GRE has less VRAM than the 9060 XT, but 12GB is still generally adequate for current gaming.
That depends heavily on regional pricing. In some places, the 9070 GRE costs about the same as a 9060 XT 16GB, which makes it a much more compelling option.
My 9060 XT can already use more than 8GB at 1440p in some games, so I’d be worried about hitting that limit well before the three-year mark with the 5060 Ti.
