I'm building my first PC in early to mid-2027 and am deciding between an RTX 5070 and an RX 9070 XT. I've only owned an Nvidia GT 730 before, so I don't have much experience with modern AMD or Nvidia cards. My use will mostly be office work, programming, and light-to-moderate gaming. I'm not sure yet whether I'll play at 1080p or 1440p, but I expect to get more into gaming after building the system.
I'm planning to pair the GPU with a Ryzen 5 9600X and dual-boot Windows and Linux. My main concern is avoiding driver problems, crashes, and hours of troubleshooting, particularly on Linux. I've read that the RX 9070 XT offers much better raw performance and more VRAM, but I've also seen reports from people who switched from AMD to an RTX 5070 or 5070 Ti because of driver issues. Both cards currently cost about the same where I live, and both options are Gigabyte models. I can't currently afford a 5070 Ti, although I may look for a discount before buying. Which card would make more sense for my use case?

Since you won’t be buying until 2027, don’t lock yourself into either card yet. GPU prices, newer releases, driver maturity, and availability could all change by then. Compare real-world prices and reviews shortly before purchasing. If a 5070 Ti drops to the same price as the 9070 XT, it could be the better Nvidia option; otherwise, the 9070 XT is the more powerful choice at equal pricing. Also, consider a different manufacturer if Gigabyte’s cooling and build quality are questionable in your region.
At the same price, the RX 9070 XT is considerably faster in traditional gaming—roughly 25–30% ahead of the RTX 5070 in many scenarios—and it has more VRAM. AMD is also generally the easier choice on Linux because of its open-source driver support. Driver problems can happen with either brand, but AMD is not automatically a troubleshooting nightmare, especially on a current Linux distribution.
For your planned setup, the 9070 XT is the stronger value if the prices are genuinely equal. It should be a very capable 1440p card and gives you more headroom as games become more demanding. The RTX 5070 still makes sense if you strongly prefer Nvidia’s software features or want the simplest possible plug-and-play experience across both operating systems, but its 12 GB of VRAM is less appealing for long-term use.
I’ll be dual-booting, so I’ll compare the actual prices and Linux support again when I buy. I may use separate SSDs for Windows and Linux, with another drive for shared data.
That’s reassuring. I was worried the reports I saw meant AMD cards were still unusually difficult to use on Linux.
