I'm currently using an Intel Core i5-12400F with an RTX 3080 Ti and want to upgrade my CPU. I'm deciding between the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Ryzen 9 7900X, but I'm not sure which is the better choice. My main use is likely gaming, though productivity performance may also matter.

Before buying, compare local prices with newer X3D chips too. If a Ryzen 7 9800X3D is only slightly more expensive, it may be worth considering; otherwise, the 7800X3D is still the better gaming-focused upgrade. If you want balanced productivity and gaming performance, also consider the non-X Ryzen 9 7900, which uses less power than the 7900X.

If gaming is your priority, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the obvious pick between these two. Its 3D V-Cache generally gives it better gaming performance, and the eight cores are more than enough for a gaming build with an RTX 3080 Ti.

The 7900X makes more sense if you regularly do video editing, rendering, compiling, or other heavily multi-threaded work. Its 12 cores are useful for productivity, and it still performs well in games, but it’s a more specialized choice than the 7800X3D.
