I'm upgrading from an Intel Core i5-12400F and currently have an RTX 3080 Ti. I'm deciding between the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Ryzen 9 7900X, but I'm not sure which processor makes more sense. My main use will determine the choice, so I'd appreciate advice for both gaming and productivity workloads.

The 7900X makes more sense if you regularly edit video, render, compile code, or run other heavily multithreaded workloads. Its 12 cores are useful for productivity, while it still performs well in games. You could also consider the regular Ryzen 9 7900, which uses less power and offers similar overall performance.

If this is mainly for gaming, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the obvious pick. Its 3D V-Cache generally gives it better gaming performance than the 7900X, and the extra cores on the 7900X usually won’t help much in games.

Between these two, I’d choose the 7800X3D for a gaming-focused build. If the newer Ryzen 7 9800X3D is only slightly more expensive where you live, it may be worth considering instead. For a mostly productivity-focused system, look beyond the 7800X3D at a higher-core-count option.
