I'm planning to upgrade from an Intel Core i9-12900KF paired with an RTX 5090 and 64GB of 6400MHz memory. I mainly use my PC for gaming and am not expecting a huge performance increase—I mostly want a CPU that runs cooler, especially in CPU-bound games. I'm leaning toward AM5 because it should offer a future upgrade path, potentially including newer Ryzen processors released in the next few years. For a gaming-only system, would the Ryzen 7 9800X3D or Ryzen 9 9900X3D be the better choice?

I’d go with the 9800X3D in this situation. It’s generally the stronger gaming-focused product, and you avoid paying extra for cores you probably won’t use if gaming is your only workload. Moving to AM5 also gives you a sensible future upgrade path.
Before replacing the whole platform, you could also try a modest undervolt on the 12900KF. A stable undervolt can reduce temperatures and sometimes help the processor maintain higher boost speeds. If you’re not comfortable tuning manually, use small changes and test stability after each adjustment.
For a gaming-only build, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the better pick. Its 3D V-Cache is aimed directly at gaming, while the extra cores on the 9900X3D are more useful for productivity workloads. In many games, the 9900X3D’s dual-CCD design doesn’t provide a meaningful advantage over the 9800X3D.

I tried undervolting when I first bought the 12900KF, but I couldn’t get it stable. I’m still pretty inexperienced with that kind of tuning, so replacing it with a cooler gaming-focused CPU may be simpler for me.
