I'm building my first PC and recently bought an RTX 5070, but I'm wondering if I made the wrong choice. I paid about $788 for it, and I can get a Radeon RX 9070 XT for roughly $800. The RTX 5070 is still unopened, so I can return it if the swap makes sense. The system will use a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL36 memory, and an Asus Prime B850M-A motherboard. Gaming will be the main use, with a 240Hz monitor, but I'll also use the PC for work and web development. I don't currently know whether any of my software requires CUDA. Is the RX 9070 XT the better choice, or are features like DLSS and Nvidia's software support worth keeping the RTX 5070?

Just verify the power supply before changing cards. A quality 750W unit is usually considered adequate, while 850W gives more headroom depending on the exact model and the rest of the system. Also keep in mind that AMD’s experience can vary more with older Vulkan games, mixed-refresh multi-monitor setups, or titles that need unofficial upscaling tools. For straightforward modern gaming, those caveats probably won’t outweigh getting the faster card for almost the same money.
For only $15 more, the RX 9070 XT is generally the stronger gaming card. It performs around the RTX 5070 Ti class in many rasterized games, has 16GB of VRAM instead of 12GB, and should give your 7800X3D more room to stretch its legs at 1440p or 4K. Unless you specifically need CUDA for your work, I’d return the unopened 5070 and switch.
I honestly didn’t know what CUDA was before this, so I’ll check whether any of my work applications depend on it.
The main reason to keep the 5070 would be Nvidia’s software ecosystem. DLSS, CUDA support, and generally mature driver behavior can matter for certain applications or older games. For regular gaming, though, FSR has improved substantially, and the 9070 XT’s extra VRAM and raster performance make it much better value at nearly the same price.
I’ve used both cards and think DLSS and FSR are fairly close in image quality now. DLSS can look a little sharper, while FSR may look slightly softer, but the difference usually isn’t enough to outweigh the 9070 XT’s performance advantage.

That’s worth checking before the return period ends. The performance and VRAM upgrade are appealing, but I’d make sure the PSU and the specific games or applications you use are compatible first.
