Should I Focus on Understanding Code or Memorizing Syntax?

When learning programming, how important is it to understand code generated by AI compared with remembering language syntax well enough to write code from scratch? Is it acceptable to look up syntax as needed, or should I prioritize memorizing it while practicing?

Syntax is secondary to the fundamentals. Build a foundation with things like loops, functions, data structures, algorithms, and—depending on the language—object-oriented concepts such as encapsulation and polymorphism. Practice implementing those ideas in one language so you understand the reasoning behind the code, not just how it is written.

The most valuable skill is developing your own solution before translating it into code. Strong programmers usually don’t memorize an entire language reference; they understand computation, architecture, algorithms, data structures, and design patterns. Looking up syntax is normal, just like a writer checking a dictionary, as long as you can reason through the solution and judge whether the resulting code is correct.

Reading AI-generated code is similar to reading someone else’s project: it can be useful, but it doesn’t automatically teach you how to program. Use AI to explain specific concepts, compare approaches, or provide small examples with simple placeholder names. Then try implementing the idea yourself and verify that you understand every part of the result.

A good learning cycle is to get an explanation, read more about the concept, and then implement it yourself. The hands-on practice is what turns the explanation into an actual skill.

Being able to solve problems and write or modify code yourself matters most. You don’t need every piece of syntax memorized, but you should understand what the code is doing and be capable of changing it, debugging it, and explaining why it works. Otherwise, relying on generated code can keep your skills from developing.
