My RX 7800 XT is still performing well, but I'm wondering whether it makes sense to upgrade before graphics card prices potentially increase. Would moving to an RTX 5070 or another newer-generation card provide a worthwhile improvement, or is the 7800 XT still strong enough that I should wait?

An RTX 5070 doesn’t make much sense as an upgrade from the 7800 XT. If you really want a substantial step up, you’d need to look at something more powerful, such as an RX 9070 XT, but recent price increases make that difficult to recommend while your current card still handles modern games well.
I’d hold on to the 7800 XT for now. If your games look good and you’re getting the performance you want, there’s no urgent reason to upgrade. Waiting another generation or two should give you a much more noticeable improvement.
The 7800 XT is still an excellent card. It has strong performance, 16 GB of VRAM, and support for newer upscaling features. An RTX 5070 is only around 15% faster in favorable situations and comes with 12 GB of VRAM, so this would feel more like a sidegrade than a meaningful upgrade. I’d keep your money and wait for a future generation unless you have a specific problem the 7800 XT can’t handle.
The 5070 might age better in some ways, but the performance increase still isn’t large enough to justify replacing a working 7800 XT.
