I'm planning a budget gaming PC for about $1,350 CAD (roughly $1,000 USD) and want to play at 1080p with decent to high frame rates. I'm deciding between these combinations:
- Ryzen 5 5500 ($125 CAD) with an RTX 5060 Ti 8GB ($610 CAD)
- Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X ($215 CAD) with an RTX 5060 ($560 CAD)
I've heard that the Ryzen 5 5500 may bottleneck the RTX 5060 Ti at 1080p, while the Ryzen 5 5600X would have minimal bottlenecking with the RTX 5060. Which combination would make more sense for gaming?
The rest of the planned system includes an MSI B550M Pro-VDH WiFi motherboard, Patriot Viper Steel 3200MHz CL16 memory, and an MSI MAG A650BN power supply.

The Ryzen 5 5500 and RTX 5060 Ti combination isn’t automatically a bad choice. At 1080p and very high refresh rates, the 5500 can limit performance in some CPU-heavy games, but bottleneck percentages aren’t fixed numbers and vary by game, settings, and frame rate target. The 5060 Ti is still the faster graphics card, so this pairing may provide better performance in GPU-limited games. If you can afford it, though, a stronger AM4 processor would give the system more headroom.
Double-check the graphics card listings and prices before deciding. If the RTX 5060 Ti is only about $50 CAD more than the RTX 5060, it could be the better value, especially if you want higher settings or plan to keep the PC for several years. Just keep in mind that the 8GB model may become limiting in some newer games, regardless of which CPU you choose.
It may be worth checking the Ryzen 5 5500X3D if it’s genuinely available for around $150 USD in your market. Its 3D V-Cache can provide considerably better gaming performance than the regular 5500 and may make it a better match for the RTX 5060 Ti. The regular 5500 is based on the Cezanne design, while the Ryzen 5 5600, 5600X, and 5500X3D use the Vermeer family, so the model names can be misleading.
The prices are current where I live: about $560 CAD for an RTX 5060 and $610 CAD for an RTX 5060 Ti. I’m mainly trying to figure out whether the cheaper Ryzen 5 5500 would hold back the Ti too much at 1080p.
