The software engineering job market feels especially rough right now, and I'm unsure whether I should change direction. I originally planned to become a data analyst, and I already know most SQL along with some Python, but I ended up focusing on front-end development instead. Becoming a software engineer seems increasingly difficult because of interview preparation, algorithm practice, and the struggle to get interviews in the first place. I've heard that entry-level data analyst roles may be more accessible than entry-level SWE positions. I genuinely enjoy coding and currently study or practice for four to six hours a day. Would it make sense to pursue data analyst jobs while continuing to build my software engineering skills?

Nobody can reliably predict where the industry is going, so I wouldn’t base the decision entirely on speculation about AI or a future market correction. Focus on the path that gives you the best chance of getting relevant experience. Keep building practical projects, tailor your applications, and consider adjacent roles instead of only applying to traditional entry-level SWE jobs.
The market is difficult for a lot of people right now, including experienced developers, so struggling to get interviews doesn’t automatically mean you’re on the wrong path. A short-term pivot or broader job search could help you gain stability without abandoning coding. Keep learning, but make sure some of your study time goes toward portfolio projects and applications rather than only interview exercises.
You don’t necessarily have to make this an all-or-nothing decision. Apply for data analyst roles while keeping your coding skills active. Since you already know SQL and some Python, you have a useful foundation, and your front-end experience can still help you stand out when presenting dashboards or data tools. You can always move toward analytics engineering or software development later.
