I recently built a gaming PC with an RTX 5070. I currently use a 180Hz Xiaomi monitor, but I'm considering replacing my old LG TV with a 55-inch LG G4 4K OLED for PC gaming. I'm not interested in competitive gaming; I mostly play games such as Monster Hunter Wilds and plan to play Expedition 33. Since the LG G4 supports up to 144Hz, would switching from 180Hz to the OLED noticeably reduce smoothness or performance? Will I really notice the difference between 180Hz and 120–144Hz, especially when most demanding games may not reach those frame rates anyway?

Refresh rate and actual FPS aren’t the same thing. In demanding games like Monster Hunter Wilds, you may not consistently reach 120 FPS unless you lower the resolution or graphics settings. The difference between 180Hz and 120–144Hz will matter much less when the game is running below those frame rates, and the OLED’s image quality, contrast, and response time could be a bigger upgrade for this kind of single-player gaming.
The LG G4 can run at up to 144Hz, so the gap from 180Hz is smaller than it first sounds. I use one with my PC and think it’s excellent, even for competitive games. Personally, I could barely tell the difference between 144Hz and 180Hz, and the OLED picture quality is a much more noticeable improvement. For the games you listed, I’d lean toward the G4.
Thanks for sharing your experience. That definitely helps, and I’ll take it into consideration.

That makes sense. I’ve noticed Monster Hunter doesn’t maintain 120 FPS during fights, but it still looks great and runs well on my current monitor, so the TV probably wouldn’t hurt the experience.
