I bought my Samsung Galaxy S24 in December 2024 after switching from an older iPhone whose battery health had dropped to 75%. I expected the S24's battery to last well, but it has never lasted a full day, even when I keep the brightness low and don't use the phone heavily. I mainly listen to music through headphones during school and work. My mom bought the same model around the same time and has experienced similar battery life. Settings shows a 4000 mAh capacity. Should I replace the battery, or could an app or background process be draining it?

I wouldn't replace the battery yet, especially since the problem started when the phone was new. Check Settings > Battery and device care to see which apps are using the most power. Unused apps can be removed or restricted from running in the background, and listening to music with the screen off shouldn't normally drain a healthy battery that quickly.
The S24 has a 4000 mAh battery, which is its normal rated capacity. Heavy use can make it run low before bedtime, but with moderate use it should generally have a reasonable amount left. Since you and your mom have had the same issue from the beginning, check background apps, signal strength, software updates, and battery usage before assuming the battery needs replacement.
Run Samsung's built-in battery diagnostic before paying for a replacement. Open the Samsung Members app, choose Support, then Phone Diagnostics, and run the Battery status test. It should give you a better idea of whether the battery itself is worn out or whether something else is causing the drain.

I couldn't get a clear list of what was using the power, but I do have around twenty apps I haven't opened in a month. I'll remove them and see whether the battery improves.
