I'm building my first desktop after gaming on a laptop for a long time. My boyfriend recently upgraded to AM5 and offered me his old AM4 parts, including a Tomahawk motherboard, two sticks of RAM, and a Ryzen 5 3600. Everything is in good condition. I would still need a CPU upgrade, power supply, and graphics card, and I'm considering a Radeon RX 9070 XT. Should I save money by reusing the AM4 parts, or would it be smarter to sell them and build a completely new AM5 system?

If you were buying every part from scratch, AM5 would be the better long-term platform because it has a much stronger upgrade path. However, moving to AM5 means replacing the motherboard and DDR4 memory too. Since those parts are free, AM4 can still make sense if your budget is limited.
Another option is to sell the donated AM4 parts and put that money toward an AM5 bundle. That costs more upfront but gives you newer CPU performance and room for future upgrades. A Ryzen 5 3600 paired with a 9070 XT will run games, especially at 1440p or 4K, where the GPU matters more. At lower resolutions or very high refresh rates, the CPU could hold the card back. I’d start with the free AM4 parts, then upgrade the CPU only if you actually see a performance limitation.
