Should I switch from Windows to Linux for gaming and everyday use?

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to deep technical topics. I mainly browse the web and play games such as Counter-Strike 2, Dead by Daylight, and Elden Ring. After seeing some impressive Linux desktop setups, I'm considering switching from Windows, but I have a few concerns: Will my games work? Should I expect better or worse performance? And does Obsidian work properly on Linux, including plugins and existing notes?

Counter-Strike 2 works for many people, and Elden Ring is generally playable through Proton. Dead by Daylight and other multiplayer games can be more complicated because anti-cheat support is decided by the game developer. Compatibility databases such as ProtonDB can help you check specific games and known issues before installing Linux.

Gaming performance usually depends on the individual game and your hardware. Some games run a little faster on Linux, some a little slower, and many feel about the same. The biggest noticeable improvement may be general desktop use: faster booting, quicker app launches, fewer background processes, and less intrusive update or upgrade messaging.

Obsidian has an official Linux version and works well, including plugins. For games, most Steam titles can run through Proton, a compatibility layer supported heavily by Valve. However, games that require kernel-level anti-cheat may not work, so check each game before switching.

Linux is appealing mainly because it gives you more control over the system and avoids many of the forced changes and background tasks found in Windows. You don’t necessarily need a special gaming distribution, but graphics drivers and a little configuration can matter. Consider testing Linux from a USB drive or setting up dual boot first so you can keep Windows for games that do not support Linux.
