I recently bought an RTX 5080 and am trying to decide whether to upgrade the rest of my system. My current PC has a Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB of RAM, an HX1200 power supply, and a 1440p 144Hz monitor. I usually replace my major components every three or four years, but this upgrade decision is less straightforward.
Competitive games already run well above 144 FPS, so my main concern is single-player games. With everything set to maximum, I sometimes notice dips below 144 FPS that feel noticeable. I understand that an X3D processor may not dramatically improve average FPS, but it could improve frame-time consistency and 1% lows.
My options are approximately $1,250 after tax for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, B650 motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5 RAM; about $360 for a Ryzen 7 5800X3D while keeping my existing AM4 platform; or simply keeping the 5900X and waiting for a future platform upgrade. I do not plan to sell my existing parts to offset the cost. Would the 5800X3D be enough to pair well with the 5080 for several years, or is moving to AM5 now worth the additional expense?

Waiting is also reasonable. AM5 gives you an upgrade path, but that path costs a lot up front, and future CPU and memory prices are uncertain. Since you already have a high-end AM4 chip, I would only buy the 5800X3D if benchmarks from the games you play show that the 5900X is actually causing the dips.
A 9800X3D will be faster, but it will not guarantee 144 FPS at maximum settings in demanding single-player games. Ray tracing and other ultra settings can be GPU-limited even with a much stronger CPU. Before spending over $1,000 on a platform change, try reducing the settings that have the biggest performance cost.
I would keep the 5900X unless the dips are genuinely bothering you, then move to the 5800X3D. The 5900X is still a capable processor, and replacing the CPU, motherboard, and RAM just to gain a relatively modest improvement in many games does not seem worthwhile at current memory and platform prices.
Your monitor resolution and refresh rate matter here. At 1440p, the 5080 may already be the limiting component in many visually demanding games, especially with ray tracing enabled. A 5800X3D should be a strong pairing for this setup, while AM5 makes more sense if you also want a new motherboard and memory for other reasons.
The 5800X3D is probably the sensible middle ground. It should improve the dips and frame pacing while letting you keep your motherboard and DDR4 memory. You would spend far less now and can skip AM5 entirely if your current performance remains acceptable until the next platform is established.
I was mainly concerned that the 5900X would hold back the 5080 in the newer games, but saving the platform-change money and upgrading later does sound more practical.
