I'm considering spending roughly $2,000 on a new gaming PC, but I'm having trouble deciding how much of that should go toward the CPU versus the GPU. My current system has a Ryzen 7 3800X, Radeon RX 5700 XT, 32 GB of DDR4 memory, and a 1440p monitor. It still works reliably, but newer or larger games such as Palworld, Rust, and Oblivion sometimes require very low settings. Simulation-heavy games like Oxygen Not Included and Cities: Skylines also become increasingly sluggish during long sessions. I don't need every game at maximum settings, but I'd like a system with better performance and some headroom. Would it make more sense to upgrade the existing AM4 system with a newer CPU and graphics card, or move to AM5 with something like a Ryzen 9 and Radeon RX 9070-class GPU? If a full upgrade is unnecessary, how should I determine which less-expensive parts would be sufficient?

A balanced new build would be something like a Ryzen 7 7700X, a reasonable B650 motherboard, 32 GB of DDR5, and an RX 9070-class card. That gives you a modern platform with future CPU upgrade options, but it costs much more because you must replace the board and memory too. Also double-check part pricing before buying; unusually expensive memory or storage can inflate a build without improving gaming performance. If you choose this route, selling the current PC as a complete system could offset part of the cost.
There is no urgent need to move to AM5 if your current system is stable. AM5 offers a better upgrade path, but the AM4 drop-in CPU upgrade is much better value right now. For 1440p gaming, prioritize the GPU unless monitoring shows the 3800X is holding back your frame rates. Simulation games may benefit from the 5800X3D first, while graphics-heavy games will see the biggest gains from a new video card.
The most cost-effective route is probably keeping your current motherboard, installing a Ryzen 7 5800X3D if your board supports it, and putting most of the budget toward a stronger graphics card such as an RX 9070 XT. That would give you a major improvement at 1440p without replacing the motherboard, memory, and other parts. It could also let you skip a platform upgrade for several years.
The 5800X3D’s advantage is its much larger 3D V-Cache, not additional cores or higher clock speeds. That extra cache can substantially improve gaming frame rates and reduce stuttering, especially in simulation-heavy games and situations where the CPU is processing lots of game-state data. It is a particularly strong upgrade for an existing AM4 gaming system.
