I'm planning to upgrade my gaming PC after being out of touch with current hardware for about three years. My system currently has a Ryzen 5 5600X, 16GB of DDR4-3200 CL16 memory, an RTX 3080 Founders Edition with 10GB of VRAM, and an 850W Seasonic Platinum power supply.
The main upgrade I'm considering is increasing the memory to 32GB, since some games are starting to use nearly all 16GB when I have Discord running. I'm also wondering whether it makes more sense to stay on AM4 and upgrade to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, or switch to an AM5/DDR5 platform with something like a Ryzen 5 9600X and 32GB of DDR5.
My primary use is gaming, with occasional photo editing that currently performs fine. I don't feel an urgent need to replace the RTX 3080, although I'm not completely opposed to a GPU upgrade. Which route would offer the best value and longevity: keeping the existing DDR4 platform, or moving to DDR5 and replacing the motherboard, CPU, and memory?

The choice mostly comes down to whether you want the lowest-cost improvement now or a platform you can upgrade again later. A Ryzen 5 9600X with DDR5 should offer strong gaming performance and leaves room for future AM5 CPUs, while an AM4 upgrade avoids the expense of replacing several components. Since the RTX 3080 is still capable, putting the savings toward a future GPU may make more sense than replacing the whole platform immediately.
I recently faced the same decision and stayed with DDR4 because I mostly game and didn’t want to pay for a complete platform replacement. With an 850W power supply and an RTX 3080 already in place, upgrading the memory and possibly moving to a stronger AM4 gaming CPU is a reasonable value choice. Choose AM5 if you specifically want longer-term CPU upgrade options rather than the best immediate savings.
Since you’re regularly hitting the limits of 16GB, upgrade to 32GB first. Use a matched 2x16GB kit if possible rather than mixing random modules. After that, check your game performance and monitor CPU or GPU utilization before deciding on a processor. If the 5600X is holding back high refresh-rate gaming, an X3D upgrade is a sensible drop-in option; otherwise, the extra platform cost of DDR5 may not provide a noticeable improvement with your current graphics card.
For gaming, the most budget-friendly move is to stay on AM4: add another matching 16GB kit or replace the current memory with a 32GB kit, then upgrade the CPU if your games are CPU-limited. A 5800X3D-class processor can still perform very well and lets you keep your motherboard and DDR4 memory. Moving to AM5 gives you a newer platform and a better future upgrade path, but the motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 costs add up quickly.
That makes sense. I’m mainly trying to avoid spending on a full platform change if the 3080 will remain the limiting part in most games.
