Should I upgrade my AM4 system to a 5800X3D or move to AM5?

I'm running an RX 9070 XT with a Ryzen 7 5700X, and I'm seeing CPU bottlenecks in a few games. I'm considering either upgrading to a 5800X3D and keeping this AM4 platform for several more years, or moving to AM5 now with a new CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory. Would a 5800X3D realistically remain useful until around 2030, or would it make more sense to skip the intermediate upgrade and save for a newer platform? I'm also concerned about the higher cost of AM5 and the potential early-adopter issues with whatever comes after it.

I’d compare the total cost rather than just the processor prices. A 5800X3D is a simple drop-in upgrade, while AM5 requires a CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory. If the 5800X3D is reasonably priced where you live, it makes sense as a cheaper stopgap. If it costs close to a newer AM5 setup, starting fresh may offer better long-term value.

I’d probably get the 5800X3D and keep the system until a future platform feels worth buying. It’s still fast enough for most modern games, and waiting lets you avoid paying for a whole new platform before you actually need one. Just don’t assume any specific CPU will definitely remain ideal through 2030—future games and your preferred frame rates are impossible to predict.

Moving to AM5 now gives you a longer upgrade path, but you don’t necessarily need an expensive high-end chip. A Ryzen 5 7600, 7500F, or a comparable newer processor can already be very strong for gaming. The best choice comes down to how much you value future upgrades versus keeping your current motherboard and memory.

It depends heavily on which games are bottlenecking, your resolution, and how severe the performance drop is. At 1440p or 4K, the 5700X may still be perfectly adequate in many games. Check GPU utilization and compare benchmarks before spending money on an upgrade. If the GPU is nearly fully loaded, a CPU upgrade probably won’t make much difference.

The 5800X3D is still a very capable gaming CPU, especially for high-refresh-rate 1440p gaming. Compared with the 5700X, it can provide a noticeable improvement in frame-time consistency and 1% lows in CPU-heavy games. It could be a good way to extend your current system, but whether it lasts until 2030 depends on your performance expectations and the games you play.
