I built my current PC around 2013–2014 with a Haswell-era Intel CPU and DDR3 memory. The hard drive recently started failing, so I finally replaced it with an SSD, and the improvement was dramatic. That has me wondering whether I should upgrade the rest of the system.
I rarely play games and have no interest in overclocking. Most of my computer time goes toward coding, video editing, and streaming media, and I'd also like to experiment with running a local LLM. My workload is primarily CPU- and RAM-bound, while a new graphics card is not important right now. I only need smooth 4K60 desktop output, and I could always add a GPU later if I get more interested in gaming.
I'm considering three approaches: upgrading within the old DDR3 platform with a better CPU and motherboard plus 32GB of RAM; waiting several months or longer and building a modern DDR5 system; or putting together a higher-end DDR4 system as a middle ground. DDR4 prices also seem fairly high, so I'm unsure whether that option makes sense.
My current computer is still usable, and my budget is flexible depending on how long I save—roughly $100 right now or up to $3,000 in a few months. Would it be better to buy a temporary used DDR3 or DDR4 upgrade, build a DDR4 system now, or wait and move to AM5 and DDR5? Are any of these options worthwhile at current new or used prices?

If you can afford it, I’d skip spending much on the old DDR3 platform and build now rather than waiting indefinitely. DDR4 should be more than adequate for coding, editing, and general use, and a modern midrange system would feel dramatically faster than Haswell. A Ryzen 5 5600-class system with 32GB of RAM is one possible budget-conscious route, with room to move to a higher-core-count processor later. Look for sales and used parts rather than paying premium prices.
Since your current machine is still functional, the strongest option may be to tolerate it for a few more months and save for a complete AM5/DDR5 build. AM4 or another DDR4 system would be a huge improvement, but it is more of a transitional platform and gives you less long-term upgrade flexibility. With a larger budget, prioritize a solid motherboard, power supply, 32GB or more of DDR5, and a processor suited to your editing and local-LLM workloads. You can continue using the old system’s graphics output until a dedicated GPU becomes useful.

If I’m already waiting several months, it may make sense to watch the next generation of CPUs arrive before buying. That could either provide better performance or push current parts down in price.
